Making the Right Career Choice for Your Family

"Is This Job Right for Me?"

Hi There!

It's Kel here!

I am so glad that we get to have a chance to chat today! I have a

HOT TOPIC here that directly associates with

MY personal LIFE... and I have been hearing it over..

and over again from others out there, like me.

We have ALL been there

Starting a new job is HARD!

We have so many options, or, for whatever reason, our options may be extremely limited.

You start asking yourself,

  • "Should I go with what I really WANT to do...?"  -or-
  • "Should I go with the more "sensible" choice...?"

Choosing the right career becomes even tougher when we become parents.

I mean, your priorities totally change, which in turn, means your career values may change, too.

How do you make the tough decision between fulfilling your career goals while still maintaining that work-life balance that will allow you to focus on your family as well?

I have had to make this decision.

It was tough.

That is why I made a list of questions you can ask yourself to help guide you through this difficult decision making process.

1. Does My Job Compromise My Responsibilities at Home?

Before you became a Mom, your job was probably the main focus of your life. Now that you are a Mom, your priorities have changed.

A question you should ask yourself, that many don't really think about is:

Does your job fit into your lifestyle?

Consider the following points:

  • Do company policies allow for flexibility in your schedule?
  • Does your job permit you to go to your kids' school plays, football practices, or even sit down and eat dinner as a family?
  • If you have a newborn, are you still expected to travel for work?
  • What about dropping off and picking up your kids at school?

In other words, does your job give you a work-life balance?

Or is it slowly draining the life out of you and making you miss out on your children's lives as well?

I know...I know... it's a loaded question, but try to be honest with yourself when you are answering.

2. Is It Adding Value to My Life?

Your career really should allow you to make progress as an individual. So many of us stay stuck in the same job for years and years without challenging ourselves, or pushing that envelope... because it's COMFORTABLE
  • Are you teaching your children to chase their dreams?
  • Or, are you teaching them to settle?

For many of us, it's important to LEAD by EXAMPLE as parents!

  • Are you doing what you LOVE and learning along the way.... or
  • Are you simply doing what you MUST to pay the bills?
  • Does your job meet or even exceed your financial needs?

Remember that you are not ONLY a Mom, but you are an individual with interests and goals.

Going after those goals will make you - and your family - happier in the LONG RUN.

3. What Is Stopping Me From Making a Change?

Sure, we all have bills to pay, but do NOT let that be your go-to excuse for staying with a job that doesn't really bring fulfillment to your life.

Oftentimes, WE GET IN OUR OWN WAY

Either we think that we will FAIL if we take a risk... so we don't.

Or, we convince ourselves that our GOALS are unrealistic

Check  in with yourself and see if FEAR or UNCERTAINTY are standing in your way, or if you are truly fulfilled within your current job.

4. What Are My Options?

Maybe your chose the career your are in because you wanted to help others. You should find out if there are other ways in which you can serve your community that will fit into your life as a Mom and match up well with your individual personality.

A great example is, let's say you are a Doctor. You may find that working the long hours is simply just too demanding. Why not venture into another branch or area within the healthcare industry? Say one that would allow you to work from home to allow you time to spend with your family while still letting your help people.  Do your research into what types of alternatives are out there and what that option would look like to you and your family.

5. You Have The Final Say!

The fact that you are here, questioning whether your current job is right for you should be an eye opener. Chances are that one or more aspects within your life are suffering because you are feeling a lack of fulfillment. Maybe you rarely see your family because you are working demanding hours; maybe your career is at a standstill because of family commitments; or perhaps you barely have any time for yourself because of both and you are unable to give your career or family the attention they both deserve. Maybe you just feel like you are caught between a rock and a hard place... or that there is another calling for you for your life's purpose.

I totally get it!
